17.  Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children, Gaza:  The first institution in Gaza devoted to the deaf, Atfaluna was founded in 1992 and now has a modern school and community outreach program.  The craft project is an income generation program which gives jobs and work-from-home opportunities to more than 350 very needy deaf women and men and their families. Besides embroidery there is the Vocational Training Carpentry Program which employs deaf teenage boys, teaching them cabinet making skills while producing wooden items. Other workshops produce weaving and pottery.  Craft production suffers from scarcity and very high cost of materials because of border restrictions.  Innovative designs and colours are used in their many new products. Atfaluna gives deaf children and adults a chance in life by providing them with the opportunity to learn, work and become part of society. Palcrafts’ grant in 2005 enabled them to train more women.
