82 Sindyanna of Galilee
markets Palestinian olive
products on the principles of fair trade and joined IFAT in 2003.
Established in 1996, it aims to advance the Arab economy in Israel and
to help preserve the land. Keen on advancing their role and abilities,
Sindyanna is run entirely by women. Olives, a chief crop of the Middle
East, for centuries have been the mainstay of Arab farmers. Israeli
authorities discourage sales of Arab-grown olive oil and since 1948 have
confiscated over 70% of Arab-owned land. Oil which cannot be used for
food is made into soap. Our soap is made by traditional methods in
Nablus then cleaned and packed by Sindyanna. New soaps include honey,
vanilla, milk and Dead Sea Mud. Za’atar from the Jenin area reaches us
despite harassment of hyssop pickers. The newest project is in Nazareth,
making traditional baskets soon to be on our shelves. In Feb. 2006 a
Palcrafts educational tour visited the new centre in Kufr Cana which has
recently been opened. |
